An abstract is a summary of a work written by the author(s). An abstract is  commonly included with an article in a scholarly or academic journal. However, it is not unusual to find one included with other academic or scholarly source types as well, such as conference papers and book chapters when individual chapters are written by different authors.  The abstract could provide sufficient information to determine whether or not to read the full article. However, additional information about the work, if available, could be very useful as well.
